What is the eCall system for motorcycles?

The first few minutes after a traffic accident are key to saving the lives of people inside the vehicle. In road accidents it often takes a while until another driver calls emergencies and ambulances arrive with the toilets. Because of this, technology in vehicles has advanced to be able to create the eCall or automatic emergency call system. Specifically, the electronic device is responsible for calling 112 automatically when it perceives a serious crash in an accident. In this way, it sends important details to the center of attention such as type of vehicle, fuel, time of the accident, location and number of passengers. However this system can also be activated manually, with a button.

This device will be mandatory on light commercial vehicles sold in the European Union from 31 March 2018. However, the system has been in place for several years in countries such as Sweden, Finland, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Slovenia. According to the Confidential, with the eCall system, those responsible in the European Union hope to reduce deaths by up to 10%.

How does the emergency call work on motorcycles?

At the moment, Spain is testing eCall on motorcycles. In this case, the device works through sensors that are located on both the helmet and the motorcycle. In a hypothetical drop of motorcyclists, the vehicle’s smart sensors would detect if the deceleration thresholds have been exceeded. In this way, it is avoided to confuse an accident with an unimportant incident, such as the fall of a helmet.

According to the DGT, in this way information would be sent to an intermediate call reception center and in just a few seconds the technicians would already know the exact location of the accident, the vehicle data and the number of occupants.

After this step, emergency technicians can contact the rider through a hands-free microphone located on the helmet. However, the driver may also be the one making the call to convey your condition and assess the need to send medical help. In the event that no one answers, an emergency protocol would be activated, in view of the possibility that the stricken person is unconscious.

On the other hand, if the driver has previously given his consent for personal data to be sent to emergencies such as medical or family history, technicians will be able to receive it in real time, which would facilitate subsequent medical attention. In this way, Traffic warns that attendance times could be reduced by 50% in rural areas and by 40% in urban areas.

Reception by motorcyclists

According to a survey conducted by the Foundation of the Royal Automobile Club of Catalonia (RACC), 61% of respondents consider the eCall system for motorcycles “very useful” in reducing deaths and serious injuries due to accidents. In addition, 78% would be willing to change their helmet, although 51% do not see fit to increase their cost. On the other hand, 46% are concerned about the transfer of private data. In addition, while the total cost of the system does not exceed 100 euros, almost half of motorcyclists (48%) they would be willing to pay for it.

First applications in motorcycles

As recently indicated by the newspaper Auto Bild, one of the first companies to implement the eCall system on motorcycles will be BMW Motorrad. The German house, which already markets cars with this electronic system, will launch the first models with the emergency call in 2017. Specifically, the system has 2 tilt and acceleration sensors, through which it identifies accidents.

When the eCall starts after an accident, it contacts the BMW call centre, to which the coordinates of where the bike is located are sent. At that moment the rescue protocol is put in place, in which emergencies are warned so that the necessary toilets are sent to recatar the injured motorcyclist.

If the fall or collision suffered by the rider is considered serious, the automatic call is made and he is given an audio connection that is supported with the call until emergencies arrive. However, if the fall has been slight, sending the message to the BMW call centre takes 25 seconds to complete. In this way, if the rider does not need assistance after the accident he can cancel the call by pressing a simple button. However, if you do not do it, the connection to the center will be made as well.
